Super foods for Children

The diets of children play an integral role in their health and learning ability, in fact, a nutritious and balanced diet is the most important thing to ensure that your child has a head start toward a healthy life. Providing your child with a healthy eating foundation can correct nutritional deficiencies, help to ward off illnesses and set up good eating practices for life.
In providing good nutrition for children, there are a range of foods that can act as super-foods, providing a higher content of vital nutrients, making them ideal for your child's development and growth.
Oily fish is a great super food for children. The brain is made from omega-3 fats - found in high quantities in oily fish - and needs them to be replenished regularly. Fatty acids also play an important role in memory, brain function, and heart health, and have been proven to help children who have behavioural and learning challenges. Good examples of oily fish include mackerel, salmon and tuna.
Fruits and vegetables should form a large proportion of any diet, whether child or adult. Eating a wide variety of different colored fruit and vegetables provides the human body with lots of different beneficial plant compounds that all work together. All fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber, and provide a healthy foundation to the diet. Oranges, apples and kiwi fruit are especially high in Vitamin C, helping to ward off colds and are a good source of calcium, essential for healthy bones.
Generally fruit and vegetables that are fresh, in season and preferably organically grown, are higher in nutrients. Also, the darker the colors, for example dark green or deep red, contain more substances that are beneficial for health.
berries, in particular, are a superfruit that provide the highest levels of antioxidants of any food per serving. blueberries, raspberries and strawberries are packed full of antioxidants, as well as Vitamin C and fiber, and protect the cells of the body against damage. Berries can be pureed for babies and cut in half for young children.
Dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt are great sources of calcium and protein, key ingredients for strong bones and teeth, as well as other vitamins and minerals, so are ideal foods for little ones. Yoghurt also contains helpful bacteria that prevent stomach infections and gastrointestinal problems. Buy natural yogurt with live bacteria and no added sugar - you can sweeten it with pureed fruit or honey to make it more appealing.

Good eating is not a punishment, but an opportunity

Turn on your TV, open a newspaper, or boot up your computer and you're bound to get some confusing news about diet and health. Don't let it drive you to distraction or to the donut shop. Instead, remember four key facts:
   1. What you eat affects your appearance, your energy and comfort, and—above all your health.
   2. America is on the wrong track. Two out of every three of us are overweight or obese. Diabetes and high blood pressure are on the rise. Heart attacks, strokes, and cancer are distressingly common. Many factors contribute to these complex problems, but the basic reasons are simple: we eat too much, we choose the wrong foods, and we don't get enough exercise.
   3. Scientists know what diet is best for health (see below). The fine print has changed and is likely to change some more, but the key facts are in.
   4. Good eating is not a punishment, but an opportunity. If you know why it's important and what to do, you'll find it enjoyable and satisfying. And if you establish an overall pattern of healthful nutrition, you'll have plenty of wiggle room to savor the treats that matter most to you.

Foods that help you stay young (Part2)

GRAPEFRUIT
Benefit: Weight loss
Substitutes: Oranges, watermelon, tomatoes
Just call it the better-body fruit. In a study of 100 obese people at the Scripps Clinic in California, those who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost an average of 3.6 pounds over the course of 12 weeks, and some lost as many as 10 pounds. The study’s control group, in contrast, lost a paltry 1/2 pound. But here’s something even better:
If you can't stomach a grapefruit-a-day regime, try to find as many ways possible to sneak grapefruit into your diet. Even a moderate increase in grapefruit intake should yield results, not to mention earn you a massive dose of lycopene—the cancer-preventing antioxidant found most commonly in tomatoes.
Bonus tip: Eat well and you’ll feel younger and more vibrant. Add exercise to the mix and you’ll practically erase markers of age.
AVOCADO
Benefit: Reduced risk of heart disease
Substitutes: Olive, canola, and peanut oils; peanut butter; tahini
Some fats are actually good for you. More than half the calories in each creamy green fruit comes from one of the world’s healthiest fats, a kind called monounsaturates. These fats differ from saturated fats in that they have one double-bonded carbon atom, but that small difference at the molecular level amounts to a dramatic improvement in your health. Numerous studies have shown that monounsaturated fats both improve you cholesterol profile and decrease the amount of triglycerides (more fats) floating around in your blood. This can lower your risk of stroke and heart disease. Worried about weight gain? Don’t be. There’s no causal link between monounsaturated fats and body fat.

Soy could save breast cancer survivors

Eating moderate amounts of soy products can help lower the risk of death or recurrence in breast cancer survivors, a new study finds.
According to the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, a moderate to high intake of soy food is associated with a 29 percent lower risk of dying in breast cancer survivors.
The diet can also reduce the breast cancer recurrence rate by 32 percent in these women, the study showed.
Previous studies had revealed controversial results regarding the efficacy of adopting a soy-rich diet in breast cancer sufferers.
While the studies suggested that soy isoflavones, a major plant-derived phytoestrogens found in soy-rich foods may interact with tamoxifen — a drug commonly used to prevent breast cancer, the new research confirms the efficacy of the soy-rich diet in both users and nonusers of tamoxifen.
‘Patients with breast cancer can be assured that enjoying a soy latte or indulging in Pad Thai with tofu causes no harm and, when consumed in plentiful amounts, may reduce risk of disease recurrence,’ scientists concluded.

Foods that help you stay young (Part1)

fruits and vegetables

Eating right isn't just about weight loss—the nutrients you take in can have a serious effect on how you think, feel, and look! Our bodies and our feelings are nothing more than reflections of the various chemicals flowing through our system on a daily basis. Make sure those chemicals are the healthy kind you get from the right mix offruits and vegetables, proteins and fats, and you’ll feel healthier, more energetic, and happier than you have in years.
In Eat This, Not That! 2010, we compiled a list of seven foods that can help keep you young. You’re only as young as you feel—so add these eight nutritious powerhouses to your daily diet, and start feeling (and acting and looking) years younger!
EGGS
Benefit: Weight loss
When it comes to breakfast, you can’t beat eggs. (That was too easy, wasn’t it?) Seriously, at a cost of only 72 calories, each large egg holds 6.3 grams of high-quality protein and a powerhouse load of vital nutrients. A study published in the International Journal of Obesity found that people who replace carbs with eggs for breakfast lose weight 65 percent quicker. Researchers in Michigan were able to determine that regular egg eaters enjoyed more vitamins and minerals in their diets than those who ate few or no eggs. By examining surveys from more than 25,000 people, the researchers found that egg eaters are about half as likely to be deficient in vitamin B12, 24 percent less likely to be deficient in vitamin A, and 36 percent less likely to be deficient in vitamin E.
Bonus tip: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Choose wisely
GREEN TEA
Benefit: Longer lifespan
Substitutes: white tea, rooibos (red) tea
Literally hundreds of studies have been carried out documenting the health benefits of catechins, the group of antioxidants concentrated in the leaves of tea plants. Among the most startling studies was one published by the American Medical Association in 2006. The study followed more than 40,000 Japanese adults for a decade, and at the 7-year follow-up, those who had been drinking five or more cups of tea per day were 26 percent less likely to die of any cause compared with those who averaged less than a cup. Looking for more-immediate results? Another Japanese study broke participants into two groups, only one of which was put on a catechin-rich green-tea diet. At the end of 12 weeks, the green-tea group had achieved significantly smaller body weights and waistlines than those in the control group. Why? Because researchers believe that catechins are effective at boosting metabolism.
GARLIC
Benefit: Cardiovascular strengthening
Substitutes: Onions, chives, leeks
Allicin, an antibacterial and antifungal compound, is the steam engine pushing forward garlic’s myriad health benefits.
To activate the most allicin possible, you have to crush the garlic as finely as you can: Peel the cloves, and then use the side of a heavy chef's knife to crush the garlic before carefully mincing it. Be sure not to overcook it, as too much heat will render the compound completely useless (and your food totally bitter).

Health Benefits of Strawberries

If you are trying to lose weight, eat healthy, or both, strawberries might be the answer to your dietary prayers.

Strawberries are High in Antioxidants
You've heard it before, but a diet high in vegetables and fruits can help you combat cardiovascular disease, cancer, and prevent or delay the onset of many of the effects of aging. Research at the USDA 's Agricultural Research Service at Lane, OK suggests that the high antioxidant levels in strawberries can help neutralize the destructive effects of free radicals in your system, while helping your body to repair its tissues by giving you an added boost of vitamin C.
A serving of strawberries will provide you with 210 mg of potassium, a mineral that will help regulate the electrolytes in your body, lowering your risk of heart attack and stroke. Strawberries are also high in folate, a key ingredient in the manufacture of red blood cells, and a possible aid in delaying the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

What are health Benefits of Eating Beets?

The beets belong to the same family as chard and spinach.  Beet leaves have a bitter taste like chard, but is rich in chlorophyll.  Although bitter, the greens have a higher nutritional value than its roots.
Both beet root and beet greens are very powerful cleansers and builders of the blood.  Betacyanin is the phytochemical in beet that gives it its rich 'amethyst' color that significantly reduces homocysteine levels.
The health benefits of beets are:

Liver health
Beets are commonly known to support the health of the liver. The liver plays a very important role in cleansing the body of harmful substances, a process known as "detoxification," or simply "detox" for short. It is very important for the body to detox regularly in order to prevent problems from arising in different parts of the body.
There are two things you can do to help your body detoxify itself: 1) Eat foods that support the liver, and 2) Eat foods that nourish the body.
And guess what? Beets do both! Beets have special nutrients that directly support your liver, and they also have plenty of other vitamins and minerals that nourish the rest of your body. So if you are looking for a natural way to detoxify your body, make sure you consider adding beets (or beet juice) to your food regimine.

Optimism reduces risk of cardiovascular diseases: Harvard study

Happier folks with more optimistic view of life are less likely to experience heart diseases or strokes compared to those with negative worldviews.

A Harvard School of Public Health review of more than 200 studies found a significant association between positive psychological characteristics-- such as optimism, life satisfaction and happiness-- and cardiovascular health.
While many prior findings disclosed ties between stress, anxiety and anger with health problems such as heart disease, the new study has provided a better understanding of positive mental status and health.

Thinking about death promotes healthy behavior

Despite what many people believe, thinking about death may not be bad for people and can even improve their health and help them re-prioritize their goals and values.
Researchers of the University of Missouri announced the new finding after reevaluating research conducted on Terror Management Theory (TMT), a branch of social psychology which focuses on how people cope with fear of mortality.
Their findings reject those of some prior findings which suggested that thinking about death is destructive and can motivate prejudice, greed and violence or depression.
The new study says subconscious thoughts about death can also lead people to make positive changes helpful for themselves and others.
